Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsten Ewing.
Hi Kirsten, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started tattooing at 19 and worked for some brutal shops and wanted to create a safe space for people to get tattooed and for women to work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The tattoo industry was rough when I started. It was male dominated and full of drugs and racism/sexism. I had some really controlling and dangerous bosses and dealt with a lot of verbal and physical assault before opening our space.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in Fineline black work mostly. But I also enjoy large abstract organic linear images too. I love loose whimsical adornments. I’m most proud of everyone at the shop and the love we have for our clients, each other, our space and community.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Don’t give up. When things get really scary just spit in your hat, stomp on the deck, and cuss the Devil. – my father always said that when I had a big problem and there were many- I’ve gone back to those words over and over.
