Life & Work with Alyssa Poplaski of New Jersey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Poplaski.

Alyssa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a 32 year old New Jersey based Technical Designer working a 9–5 in the NYC fashion industry, with content creation as my passion project side gig. I was always the girl with the digital camera in middle school, high school and college, documenting everything, and like most millennial girls, I grew up watching YouTube. Ironically, I refused to download TikTok for the longest time. I first discovered it a little after COVID when a girl I was babysitting asked me to help her film a video for it, but I didn’t download the app myself until around 2021 – 2022.

In 2023, I pieced together a few clips from a fun weekend with friends and decided to post them. TikTok became my little “secret” creative outlet where I could pretend no one I knew was watching, and I quickly fell in love with capturing, editing and the community aspect of sharing. I kept sharing more of my everyday life, fashion, beauty, wellness and career, and it slowly snowballed from there, eventually giving me the confidence to start sharing a little more on Instagram too.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. There was definitely a learning curve when it came to figuring out how to edit engaging content, and balancing content creation with my 9–5 is still a daily challenge. But one of the biggest hurdles was honestly just hitting “post” and getting over the fear of being perceived by former classmates, friends, coworkers and the internet in general.

I used to get so embarrassed when someone told me they saw one of my videos. I would literally sweat before hitting post. Now, my response is simply “thank you,” and I genuinely mean it with gratitude. Posting has become second nature, and it’s crazy to look back and realize how much confidence I’ve gained just by continuing to put myself out there.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve always been creative and grew up loving art, which led me to study Women’s Fashion Design at FIT. Today, I work as a Technical Designer in the NYC fashion industry, fitting women’s clothing on live models and perfecting garments before they reach the customer.

I’m also very multi passionate. I’m a former soccer player who loves all things wellness, yoga, travel, fashion and beauty, and content has become my weird little online diary where I get to share all of it. This year, I opened my own LLC and signed with social media management to help me balance growing brand partnerships alongside my 9–5. I’m proud that I’ve created space for all the different parts of myself instead of choosing just one.

How do you think about happiness?
Being outdoors, spending time with the people I love and exploring somewhere new. I’m happiest on a long walk, traveling to a new city, trying a new restaurant or coffee shop, or just having a really good day with my family and friends. I think the older I get, the more I realize happiness for me is less about big moments and more about being present enough to enjoy the little ones.
