Check Out Brittany Chin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Chin.

Hi Brittany, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey to starting Hoboken Speech Stars really grew out of my love for both speech-language pathology and the Hoboken community. I have lived in Hoboken for more than 14 years now, and this city has become such an important part of my life. It is where I built my career, made lifelong friendships, and, most importantly, where I am raising my two sons.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful place for my children to grow up. One of my favorite things about living here is how connected the community feels. I’m constantly walking around town with my boys in our double stroller and running into neighbors, friends, and families I know. I’ll often see students I work with while we’re out getting coffee, walking to the park, or just going about our day. There is something really special about being able to see the families I work with as part of my everyday life, too.

I became a speech-language pathologist because I wanted to work with children and make a meaningful difference in their lives. Early in my career, I worked in a variety of settings and eventually spent many years with the NYC Department of Education, where I developed a particular passion for working with children with complex communication needs and AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). I also became passionate about early intervention, parent coaching, and helping families understand that communication is so much more than just producing speech.

After years of working in larger systems, I realized how much I valued being able to work more individually with children and families and tailor therapy to the child in front of me. I wanted to create a practice where therapy could feel natural, play-based, collaborative, and truly connected to a child’s everyday life.

That vision eventually became Hoboken Speech Stars. I started the practice with the goal of providing high-quality, individualized speech and language therapy to children and families in Hoboken and the surrounding communities. I work with children from infancy through young adulthood, both in person and through teletherapy, and I especially enjoy collaborating with parents, teachers, and other professionals so that the skills we work on in therapy carry over into a child’s real world.

Building the practice has also felt like a way of giving back to a community that has given so much to me. I love that my professional life and my personal life are so intertwined with Hoboken. The families I work with aren’t just clients—they are part of the community that I see and interact with every day. As a mom myself, I also understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate services for your child, and I try to make the process feel as supportive, personal, and straightforward as possible.

One of the most rewarding parts of building Hoboken Speech Stars has been watching it grow through relationships and word of mouth within the community. I feel very lucky that I get to combine my career, my passion for helping children communicate, my love for my own children, and my connection to Hoboken into something that is truly my own.

For me, Hoboken Speech Stars is more than just a business. It is my small way of contributing to the community that I love and helping make Hoboken an even better place for families and children to grow and thrive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road! Like any small business, there have been plenty of challenges and a lot of learning along the way.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to be both a clinician and a business owner. I went to school to become a speech-language pathologist, not an entrepreneur! When I started Hoboken Speech Stars, I quickly realized that running a private practice involves so much more than working directly with children. There are scheduling logistics, insurance questions, billing, paperwork, marketing, hiring, and all of the other behind-the-scenes pieces that people don’t necessarily see. I’ve had to learn many of those things through experience and figure out what works best for my families and my practice.

I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that building something meaningful takes time. There have been plenty of bumps along the way, but I’ve come to appreciate those challenges because they’ve helped me build a practice that feels authentic to who I am and the kind of care I want to provide.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Hoboken Speech Stars is a pediatric speech and language therapy practice serving children and families in Hoboken and the surrounding communities. I work with children from infancy through young adulthood with a wide range of communication needs, including speech and language delays, articulation, social communication, fluency/stuttering, autism, and complex communication needs. I have a particular passion for early intervention and AAC (augmentative and alternative communication). My background includes many years with the NYC Department of Education, including working as an AAC evaluator, and I bring that experience into my private practice today.

I take a very individualized, play-based approach to therapy and place a strong emphasis on parent collaboration. I want therapy to feel natural and enjoyable for children, while also giving parents practical strategies they can use in everyday life. What I am most proud of is the relationships I have built with the families I work with. Because I live in Hoboken and am raising my own two sons here, I feel genuinely connected to the community I serve. I think that personal connection, combined with my clinical experience and the individualized attention of a small practice, is what sets Hoboken Speech Stars apart. Ultimately, I want every child and family I work with to feel supported, understood, and confident in their communication journey.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been chatty and social, very interested in theatre and performing! Also I was definitely reading and studying constantly, which is something that I have never really stopped doing.
