Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Jameson-Calin.
Hi Debra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After working my way from a Fabric Assistant to the Fabric Buyer/ Research Director handling $10m budget for several large clothing corporations , I found myself at a crossroad. It was 2004 and many companies were phasing out my position. I could have persued working for smaller companies, but decided to start another career that would put my love for animals, yet satisfy my creative side. I chose pet grooming, put myself through grooming school and incorporated my business in 2005.
I bought a Sprinter van, had it customized with the necessary equipment and for the next 10 years established my client base in Bergen County NJ. Sold the van in 2015 and opened Miss Molly’s Lap Of Luxury Grooming Salon which now has 350 clients!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
After opening the salon, for many of those first years, I had difficulty finding good groomers that were reliant and really cared to know or learn about quality grooming techniques . I now have a full staff of school trained professional groomers on my team.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I do is actually part business and part creative. My groomers handle the scissor styling on our dog clients needing hair cuts. My area is our cat clients and dogs needing to be hand stripped.,
What are your plans for the future?
Starting up a seasonal or monthly blog with grooming/ health news.
To possibly add another groomer to my staff and have the salon open another day or two during the week.
