Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashana Standard.
Hi Lashana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began during the pandemic, when I decided to turn my creativity into something meaningful and wrote my first children’s book, Alphabet Space. What started as an idea during a challenging time grew into a passion for creating my book that children can enjoy and learn from.
Since then, I’ve published three more books. I’ve also had the opportunity to share my books at vendor events and connect with people in my community.
Today, I’m continuing to grow my children’s book journey by finding more ways to put my books into the hands of children and the adults who support them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. One of my biggest struggles has been marketing my book and getting it in front of the right audience. It can be challenging trying to reach parents, teachers, and schools while also building awareness around my books.
There have been times when I felt discouraged, but I’ve continued to put myself and my book out there. I’ve learned that growth takes patience, consistency, and not giving up when things don’t happen as quickly as you hoped.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a children’s book author who creates fun, creative, and educational books for young readers. My work focuses on making learning exciting and helping children connect with books through colorful ideas, relatable topics, and imaginative stories.
I’m most proud of turning an idea I had during the pandemic into something real with my first book, Alphabet Space, and continuing to create new books since then.
What sets me apart is that I’m not just creating books—I’m building a connection with children, parents, teachers, and schools. I care about creating books that children will enjoy while also giving parents and educators something meaningful they can share with them. I’m proud of continuing to grow, learn, and put my books out into the world even when marketing and building an audience can be challenging.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like most about New Jersey is the sense of community and the opportunities to connect with different people. I also love that there are so many local events, schools, small businesses, and vendor opportunities where I can share my books and meet families.
What I like least is the cost of living and how expensive it can be to run and grow a small business. Sometimes it can also be challenging finding the right opportunities and getting your work noticed, but I continue to put myself out there and make the most of the opportunities available.
