Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Beauchemin.
Hi Sara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began in a small women’s fitness group in my hometown, where I decided to take the leap and earn my first fitness certification. From there, I continued to expand my certifications and began renting a room at a local small business, teaching just twice a week. Before long, the studio was packed, classes were filled, and I had a growing waitlist.
In 2018, I decided to take the biggest leap yet and open my own studio in my hometown of Bordentown, NJ. We opened with a bang—wall-to-wall mats, sweat flying, high vibes, and incredible energy!
Then COVID hit, and like so many small businesses, we had to pivot. For several months, we went virtual. I loved still being able to see my clients’ faces, stay connected, and continue growing our community by adding weekly classes to our virtual library.
As things began to open back up, I found a beautiful new space in downtown Hightstown. I decided to take another leap of faith, rebrand my entire business, and make the move to Hightstown.
We’ve now been here for over five years, and I truly couldn’t be happier. While I do miss the days when the studio was just a five-minute drive from home, traveling outside my hometown has always been worth it. I’m so grateful for how this journey has grown, for the incredible community we’ve built, and for every person who has been part of the ride!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning my own business has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it hasn’t come without its challenges. Running a business is a full-time commitment, and there have been many times when I’ve had to miss out on life events, moments, and time with my three children because the business needed me. Finding that balance between being a business owner, a mom, and simply having time for myself has been one of my biggest challenges.
Then came COVID, which brought an entirely new set of obstacles. Keeping the studio going during such an uncertain and difficult time was challenging, but I knew how much our clients needed that sense of community and movement. We worked hard to keep classes going virtually and find ways to help our clients feel connected, motivated, and good in their own bodies. Looking back, all of that effort was absolutely worth it. We not only made it through, but we came out stronger as a community.
Two years ago, I faced another unexpected challenge when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout my treatment, I continued to run my business and teach my classes. Staying connected to my clients and showing up for my community gave me something positive to focus on during a very difficult chapter of my life. Teaching, moving, and being surrounded by the people I love helped me stay strong, positive, and grounded.
There have certainly been moments when owning a business has tested me, but each challenge has also reminded me why I started. My business has become so much more than a place to teach yoga and fitness—it’s a community, a source of strength, and a part of my life that has carried me through some of my hardest moments.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Although owning my studio is my true passion, the reality is that sometimes your passion doesn’t quite pay all the bills—and that’s where my “day job” comes in!
I’m a preschool teacher in Trenton, and I’ve been teaching little minds for more than 25 years. Teaching has been such a meaningful part of my life, and I’m incredibly lucky to have the most amazing work family. They make even the hardest days fun, and I truly don’t know what I would do without them.
Between teaching preschool and running my studio, my days are definitely full! But both jobs have given me something incredibly special: the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, whether I’m helping little ones learn and grow or helping adults feel stronger, healthier, and happier. I’m grateful that I get to do both.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next five years, I hope to continue growing the studio and reaching even more people in the community. My goal is to create a welcoming space where people can come not only to move their bodies, but to connect, feel supported, and be part of something special.
I also want to put more energy into growing my retreat business. I envision creating both international and domestic retreats that go beyond just yoga and fitness. I want to plan adventures where we can experience new cultures, explore beautiful places, try new things, and see more of the world—all while sharing those experiences with an amazing, safe, and supportive community.
Ultimately, I want to create opportunities for people to step outside of their everyday routines, challenge themselves, make lasting memories, and connect with others along the way. There is so much more of the world to see, and I can’t wait to experience it together!
