Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Carabelli.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
About 8 years ago, a good friend of mine asked me to do “guest portraits” for her sister’s wedding. I had never heard of it before so she sent me an example and I immediately thought, “I don’t think I can do that!” With some kind persuading, she convinced me I could paint guests at a quick pace, and they would, in fact, look amazing. I was so nervous, but everyone really loved their portrait. It all started from one wedding and now has escalated into a growing small business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am not sure I would call this a struggle, but practice is what really made everything go much smoother. In my free time, I timed myself to see how long it took me to draw and paint a couple. Then I would do it again, this time faster! I did this for months until my technique felt like muscle memory.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist who specializes in watercolor. I am best known for my guest portraits, but I also do a lot of custom watercolor paintings. I paint restaurants, homes, engagement pictures, etc. I also do custom wedding stationery. I am most proud of the paintings that I create for my family and friends.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking a risk on myself and my small business has been one of the most rewarding—and sometimes scariest—things I’ve ever done. Owning a small business has taught me that growth doesn’t always look the same. Some seasons are about celebrating the highs, while others are about learning, adjusting, and simply keeping going.
It can be scary not knowing exactly what each month will bring, but it can also be so rewarding to look back and realize how far you’ve come.
