Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiyah Spaulding.
Hi Jamiyah , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started off as a child on the porch, braiding and yelling at my Bratz doll head for moving as if she were a real person. I grew up always having my hands in some sort of hair, whether that was my sisters’, my aunts’, my friends’, or even my own.
In middle school, I was faithfully on YouTube learning all the natural styles. I learned my hair and nurtured it from damaged to healthy curls. Rocking the pineapple look with a shoestring holding my hair up, Bantu knots, twist-outs, etc.
Fast forward to 2019. I graduated high school and went to school for business. Plans changed when COVID hit, and I was now doing school online. I found myself closing my laptop, deciding it wasn’t for me, and before I knew it, I was servicing clients outside of my house.
A few months later, the opportunity to rent a chair arose, and I took it. Not knowing how I was going to pay weekly booth rent in a different city with no real, substantial clientele. But Jesus was always in the midst. I successfully rented a chair for two years and then moved to a more personal suite with a few colleagues. This lasted for another three years, until I realized I was getting older and our lease was ending.
I knew hair was more than just doing hair for me. So, I wanted to make it into my career. I enrolled in cosmetology school in August 2025 and graduated June 3rd, 2026.
I started working in a salon as an assistant in the beginning of August, and by August 30th, I was let go for being “overqualified.” The seasoned stylist didn’t want to hold me back, knowing and seeing that I was ready to be a stylist.
In the moment, the situation was a hard pill to swallow. I was left to start over again. But again, Jesus was always in my midst.
I found another salon and poured everything into myself and my business. I had a plan, and succeeding was the only goal. I started in September with little to no clientele, and by October 1st, I was fully booked ,months in advance. November, December, and on and on.
By July 14th, 2026, I transitioned from being salon based and moved into my own personal studio to expand my vision of a luxury, faith based, serene environment.
And now, here I am, being recognized to tell my story all because I walked by faith and not by sight.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As many people in business will tell you, entrepreneurship is hard. You have to know how to pivot and make it work. Throughout this journey of being a stylist, I worked at Wawa to make ends meet and help pay for booth rent, products, and the other expenses that came with building my business.
This hasn’t been a smooth road. There has been a lot of stopping and starting over, a lot of learning, and a lot of moments of not knowing what was next.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Serene Salon?
My business is more than just hair; it’s about creating an experience. I’m a hairstylist specializing in healthy hair, extensions, color, and luxury hair services, with a strong focus on making sure every client feels God’s peace and love through my care for them and their hair.
What sets me apart is the intention behind what I do. I don’t believe in simply doing hair and sending you on your way. I want my clients to understand their hair, learn how to properly care for it, and leave feeling educated and confident. Whether I’m creating a custom color, installing extensions, or helping a client get their hair back healthy, I’m always focused on the bigger picture.
My brand is rooted in faith, beauty, and creating a serene environment where women can feel comfortable, seen, and taken care of. I’m most proud of how much my brand has evolved while still remaining true to who I am. I’ve built my business from the ground up, through seasons of uncertainty, starting over, and learning as I went.
I want readers to know that when they support my brand, they’re supporting a woman who genuinely loves what she does. My goal is to continue creating a luxury experience while building a brand that inspires other women to walk by faith, pursue their purpose, and trust the process , even when the journey doesn’t look the way they imagined.
If He did it for me, He can do it for you too.
